Decorate The House

In order to get into the birthday spirit, your house needs to look the part! From colourful streamers and balloons, to confetti and bunting, there are lots of ways to dress your house up for your special day (and create an enchanting Zoom background in the process):

  • Take your blown-up balloons and hang them from different lengths from the roof to create a fun curtain
  • Get out your craft scissors and cut out lots of triangles to attach to streamers and create fun bunting
  • Pull out the Christmas lights to add to the atmosphere
  • Fill balloons with confetti to make DIY party poppers

Celebrate With A Costume Party (On Zoom If Necessary)

Stuck with household gathering limits on their big day? Send a virtual invite to your friends and family that encourages them to dress to theme and celebrate via a Wi-Fi connection. You’d be surprised at the costumes you can fashion out of things that are hiding around the house!

If you’re stuck deciding on a theme, here are a few to get your imagination going:

  • A decade’s party from the time they were born (don’t forget to dig out those butterfly clips or leg warmers)
  • Things that start with the initial of their first name (I’m sure someone can’t wait to dress up like an airplane using old boxes)
  • Your favourite TV show or movie
  • A famous name party (encourage everyone to dress up as a famous Jennifer or other celebrity)
  • A holiday’s party (see how creative people can get when they’re challenged to dress up as Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Day, or Christmas)

Have A Delicious Cake Decorating Contest!

Stack them high! Cut out shapes! Fill them with sprinkles that will explode like confetti!

Every birthday should have cake, and a cake decorating contest is a great way to ensure everyone gets a slice and has fun while doing so. It’s also a fantastic way for loved ones to join in on Zoom to celebrate and eat cake in the process. Here are a few essential things that you and your guests will need to pick up from your local Coles:

  • White chocolate, chocolate, and caramel mud cakes (the more the better)
  • Piping bags
  • Ready made frosting (or create your own using butter, icing sugar, vanilla essence, and food colouring)
  • Sprinkles
  • Marshmallows
  • Lollies (snakes, raspberries, and anything else you can fit on a cake!)
  • And any other toppings you see fit

Once you’re ready to go, set a timer and have everyone make their cake! The best cake will win bragging rights for the night.

Write Them A Hallmark Birthday Card & Send Them A Birthday Care Package

There’s nothing better than receiving a handpicked and handwritten card that’s filled with love on your birthday (or any occasion for that matter). Such a simple act can spread so much joy on someone’s special day, especially if their celebrations can’t go ahead as originally planned due to restrictions.

If you’re looking to take caring to the next level, put together a care package that’s filled with everything they’ll need to get the (safe) party started.

Here’s a few things to include in your box:

  • You handwritten Hallmark birthday card
  • Confetti
  • Party hats
  • Their favourite drink
  • Chocolates
  • Cake mix
  • And anything else you think will brighten their day!

And Finally, If You Want A Sweet Way To Celebrate Your Own Birthday In Lockdown… Then Say Hello To Your Future Self With A Birthday Time Capsule

While we’re currently living through the moments that will fill history books, now is the perfect time to put together a time capsule for your future self and tuck it away somewhere safe. Whether it’s in an old shoebox or a giftbox you received as a birthday present, here are a few things to include inside:

A letter (and birthday card or two) to your future self

Pick a date and year in the future that is important to you (whether it’s your birthday or another special time) and write a letter to that version of you. Don’t forget to include:

  • The date
  • How old you turned
  • How you celebrated your birthday
  • The things that are important to you right now
  • The people you currently love and have in your life
  • What the world looks like right now (and how you hope it will be then)
  • Your biggest accomplishments this year and the bucket list items you want to tick off in the future

While you’ve got pen to paper, don’t forget to write yourself a birthday card or two for your future milestone birthdays! Pick a few big birthdays (anywhere from your sweet 16th to your 100th year of life) and picture what you want your life to look like. Send some kind words of encouragement to your future self, and a few cheeky inside jokes that the older version of you can have a giggle at.

And don’t forget to include a few little things that will be exciting to look back on:

  • Today’s newspaper
  • A couple of magazines that you have laying around the house
  • A few of your deflated birthday balloons, streamers and confetti
  • All the birthday cards you received from loved ones for your special day
  • Printed out screenshots of birthday wishes from loved ones
  • A few photos from the day (you can’t let yourself forget about all the delicious cake you ate)
  • Plus anything else you know that you’d love to look back on (like the price of petrol and housing right now)

Happy celebrations! xx
